Rapeseed oil is the third-largest source of vegetable oil and second-largest source of protein meal in the world. The term “rape” derives from the Latin word for turnip, rapa or rapum, cognate with the Greek word rhapys. The species Brassica napus belongs to the flowering plant family Brassicaceae.
Top Canola/Rapeseed Producing Countries. In 2019, Canada, European Union, China, India, and Australia were the top five countries in rapeseed production. Canada alone produced more than 19 million tons of rapeseed.
